Our Work with NASA

Our work on the Mars Habitat food production system.

The NASA Deep Space Food Challenge

We were one of the top 25 US teams competing in the NASA Deep Space Food Challenge. Though we didn’t progress to the top 10 US teams, we are still incredibly proud of our progress! We appreciate all the support that we received over the years, and we remain committed to our mission statement of ensuring food security.

Despite not progressing to the next phase, we are still honored to have participated, and as a result have left this portion of the site up. Anyone interested in our work during the competition is welcome to read through the rest of this section!

No Crew Maintenance Required!

Aside from initially planting the system, no regular maintenance is required for any of our devices. The prototype will regulate itself and maintain an ideal internal environment for the crops within.

After the planting cycle is complete, the only “maintenance” a crew would have to do is harvest the food and pick what they want for dinner!

Fresh, Organic Produce

Astronauts will be able to enjoy fresh, organic produce, any time throughout their journey. With a quick sprout-to-harvest cycle, astronauts could be looking at changing up their diet monthly. Additionally, in each grow cycle, many different varieties of produce can (and should!) be grown. Want spinach, soy beans, and turnips? No need to choose between them! All can be simultaneously grown in one cycle.
